Part to Part and Part to Whole Ratios

A part-to-part ratio compares one group with another; a part-to-whole ratio compares one group with the total. In a class of 5 boys and 7 girls, boys to girls is 5 : 7, but boys to the whole class is 5 : 12. Read carefully which one a question is asking for.
