Scale and Proportion

A scale says how a drawing relates to the real thing. On a map at 1 : 50000, one centimetre stands for 50000 centimetres, which is half a kilometre, so 4 cm on paper is 2 km on the ground. Multiply to enlarge back to real size, divide to shrink down.
