Equations as Balance

An equation says that its two sides are worth exactly the same, like a scale that sits level. Whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other, or the balance tips and the equation stops being true. Taking 3 off both sides of x + 3 = 8 keeps it level and leaves x = 5.
