One-Step Equations

An equation stays true as long as you do the same thing to both sides. To solve a one-step equation, undo whatever is attached to the variable: subtract what was added, or divide by what multiplied. Solving x + 5 = 12 means taking 5 off both sides, which leaves x = 7.
