Add and Subtract Integers

Adding a negative number moves left along the number line; subtracting one moves right. Subtracting is the same as adding the opposite, so 5 - (-3) becomes 5 + 3 = 8. Reading each sign as a direction rather than a rule keeps the arithmetic straight.
